April Showers Bring May Flowers Home Décor Ideas

Since we moved, a big part of what I’ve wanted to do with the blog rebrand is bring you all inside our home. There is so much going on and plenty of cosmetic changes we want to make; I want you to be part of it (I love opinions, even if I don’t always follow them haha). So that will be another post. In the meantime, it’s been a long time coming to share with you all how I celebrate the seasons. Every month I do a different theme for the house. As an event planner, I see all types of fun ideas and when I ran across a creative brief that incorporated hanging umbrellas and crystal raindrops, the wheels got to turning and I decided to combine one theme into two months. I’d like to thank my husband in advance for enabling helping me! So without further ado, our April Showers Bring May Flowers home décor:

While the large corporation whose creative I had a glimpse into has the budget to spend a whole lotta dollars to bring concepts alive through their décor, I like to keep costs to a minimum. Instead of expensive design galleries, I sought out finds from Hobby Lobby, Etsy, ebay, Amazon, Ross and Dollar General. Hubs upcycled some crystals we’ve been meaning to remove from the lighting in our master bathroom and gave me some of his fishing line, too.

Front Entrance

Starting with the front door, I got the parasols from Hobby Lobby for $5.99, the flowers from Dollar General for a few bucks and I had the hot glue gun, Super Glue and burlap ribbon on hand. It’s so easy to make these cute little umbrella door hangers! I like working on the floor so I can just spread out. Wherever you make these, just make sure you have a safe spot to set the hot glue gun. Cut the burlap ribbon to the size you need then Super Glue one end onto the parasol. Hold it for a few seconds, get the hot glue gun out and glue the other loose end onto the end you originally super glued. I went on the underside and dabbed hot glue in between the parasol and the burlap ribbon to get it to stay really well. I took little ribbons I had left over from my fall décor and tied them onto the burlap then hot glued them for extra security. Then I inserted the flowers into the parasols being careful not to tear the parasol with the flower stems.

I found the galoshes (or rain boots as they call them in Arkansas) at Ross then just stuck left over flower stems in them and sat them on the porch. April Showers Bring May Flowers Decor

Mantel

For the mantel, I went to Etsy and ordered the umbrella garland for about $6.50 from Heyday Dry Goods. It was much longer than what I ordered, so I cut it into two pieces. I also got the print for around $5.00 from GraphicLoveShop and had it printed at FedEx Office  just to make sure the sizing would come out right. They had a little snafu and it only ended up costing me a $1.36 with the discount they extended for keeping me waiting. I love when that happens! I got a white frame from Walmart to put it in. The mason jars I already had, the little white ceramic umbrella is actually a ring holder. I got it and the floral garland at Hobby Lobby for $5.00 each (they were both 50% off) and the hydrangeas were also from Dollar General. I got the bee (because I just liked him) at Ross along with that glass jar. The hubs and I both thought it looked like rain running down it. The window is a staple. It’s always up on the mantel. We got it in San Diego from a shop in Little Italy. And the clouds are just from pillow stuffing/batting.

Dining Room

For the dining room, I enlisted the help of the hubs. I knew I wanted to do parasols (since it’s bad luck to open an umbrella inside and to me a parasol is not an umbrella /wink ), raindrops, flowers and to just make it “springy”. Of course, I also wanted to implement my love of tea to go with the theme, so on ebay I found the Royal Albert Flower of the Month Series Tea Cups with their Saucers. I was really happy when the seller accepted my first offer! We each have our ‘regular’ seats at the dining room table and our teacup coincides with our birth month at each place setting.

First, my wonderful husband got up on the step stool and ran fishing line across the dining room so the parasols would hang upside down. Sorry for the poor cell phone shot:

The hanging raindrops were actually crystals taken from our master bathroom lighting with fishing line looped through (the hubs did all that for me – he’s seriously wonderful). To hide the fishing line, I wrapped it in floral garland:

For the tablescape, I used a lot of things I already have… the chargers are from Hobby Lobby, the white plates are from Spain, the napkins I use a lot. For those who don’t know, I’m big into napkin folding and decided on a fan just to make it simple. The napkin rings I’ve had for years. The teapot my grandmother gave me years ago and the small finger bowls I got on Amazon thinking they were plates, but figured, “What the hey…I’ll use them anyway.”  The runner I got from Amazon awhile ago and the tiny mason jars are from Hobby Lobby as are the yellow silk flowers. Those green peonies in the teapot are the same ones I used for St. Patrick’s Day for my centerpiece. Shhh don’t tell. 😉

We keep binoculars on the window sills because we have a family of deer that live on our land. They visit each morning and evening, so we watch them feed and run through.

And here it is, all together. Hubs and I *just* got a new camera, so I will have to play with it to get some better photos.

A question I get is do we really eat at the table. Yes, we do and we just move the plates to the kitchen bar area or to the side. It only takes a few seconds and we have fun with the themes in the house.
