A Magnificent Mojito with the Magnificent BruJoy Muddler

Mojito

Disclosure: I received a Bru Joy cocktail muddler at no cost in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way. If you make a purchase, I may receive a commission which helps me to keep bringing you great giveaways on my blog!

As a Miami native, I am SUPER picky about my mojitos. Since I left Florida over six years ago, I’ve searched for a mojito that could live up to those back home. The only place I’ve found it: My kitchen! And without *THE* perfect cocktail muddler, my mojitos just wouldn’t be the same. That’s why I use a Bru Joy muddler. I love their garlic press and their kitchen/bar tools are top notch.

So what’s a muddler, you ask? Mixologists and bartenders (or anyone making a drink) use muddlers to pulverize fruits, herbs or spices which releases their oils and flavors. It also dissolves sugar easily and infuses your drink with wonderful, pure flavor! It is much more thorough than using the back of a metal spoon. And forget a wood spoon! Wood can splinter and flavors absorb in wood which can transfer to your drinks. Another reason I love the Bru Joy is that it will not scratch your glassware or stainless barware. The grooved rubber end is easy on those surfaces, but sturdy enough to do its job.

I’ve been under the weather and I’m on anti-biotics, so I wanted to make an alcohol-free version of my blackberry mojito because I felt like having something a bit refreshing. The mint and soda water is also soothing. Don’t worry, for those who’d like to indulge with a li’l rum, I’ll be sure to include those instructions.

So let’s get started!

BLACKBERRY MOJITO RECIPE

Ingredients

What you will need:

Bru Joy cocktail muddler
Cocktail Shaker
6-8 Mint Leaves
4-5 Large Blackberries
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons sugar (I use raw sugar) + a little more to sugar the glass rim
1/4 cup soda water (you can also use 7-Up/Sprite/Sparkling Lemonade or Ginger Ale)
Ice

Use half a small lime and run it along the edge of your glass. Put sugar on a paper plate or into a bowl and put your glass in to sugar the rim. Use a handle juicer to get the two tablespoons of lime juice:

In a cocktail shaker, add lime juice, sugar, mint leaves and blackberries. Use your Bru Joy cocktail muddler to mash-up/muddle the mint into the sugar and lime juice. This will release the oil from the mint, dissolves the sugar into the lime juice and crushes the blackberries which balance all the flavors in your drink. Add the soda water, stir well (or shake gently in the cocktail shaker) and pour over ice. Garnish with mint leaves and blackberries.

VERSION WITH ALCOHOL:
Instead of 1/4 soda water, use 1/4 WHITE rum
After you have poured your drink into its glass, top off with two tablespoons of soda water

It totally hit the spot! The lime/mint balance with the blackberries are just the perfect balance. You can use strawberries, mango, peaches and so forth. Sky’s the limit!

LAST STEP: ENJOY!
